Making A Record Book

Many of you are about to start making your own record books... while we will go over them several times at our club meetings, here are some important things to keep in mind while you get going:

The purpose of the record book is to do just that- record! You want to be sure that yo record ALL of the important information about your pony. This includes the date of each and every vet and farrier visit and exactly what happened, when your pony gets dewormed, any switches in your pony's feed, etc. You will also want to make sure that you include all the essential information about your pony. The best way to think about it is: If you left town for a year and just gave me your pony and your record book, I should be able to keep everything the same for him and answer any question the vet or farrier might ask me!

You will find that you must constantly work on keeping your record book updated. Otherwise you will have a very hard time trying to get it ready for your test. Even more important than that, if you are working with a vet and perhaps they want to know "When did your pony get new shoes?" You will have a hard time answering it if you don't keep your record book up to date!

THIS IS IMPORTANT: There is no "right" format for your record book. However, there are definitely better ways to do it than others. Pony club provides us a good template to use as a starting place. Many people find that it works better for them to re-organize the information into a more user-friendly format. WHAT YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE OF IS THAT PEOPLE CAN FIND THE INFORMATION THEY NEED IF THEY ARE LOOKING AT YOUR BOOK!

Happy Recording :)
